“Music is a passion,” John Ryan, a Pittsford native and graduate of McQuaid Jesuit High School, said.

That passion led him to his current success – helping to write and produce the new One Direction album, “Take Me Home.” The album was released in November.

Pittsford native John Ryan, 25, grew up in a very musical family. His family -- including his brother, sister, mother and father --  all play an instrument and greatly enjoy music. His father, Chuck, used to play classics such as The Beatles and The Who on the home piano.

When he was 6, Ryan’s mother encouraged him to take piano lessons. Although he wasn’t a big fan of attending each lesson, today he is very grateful for his family pushing him along.

“Music is a passion,” John Ryan said.

That passion led him to his current success – helping to write and produce the new One Direction album, “Take Me Home.” The album was released in November.

The British boy band skyrocketed in recognition after their debut single "What Makes You Beautiful." The band first gained popularity in the UK after appearing on the “X Factor” television show.

Ryan found out last February that he would have a hand in developing their new album. He graduated from McQuaid Jesuit High School in 2006 and continued his education by attending Berklee College of Music, graduating in 2010.

After college, Ryan began working in Los Angeles at Family Affair Productions where he began writing and producing music.

He then teamed up with Julian Bunetta a coworker, who also works for Sony Music Entertainment and X-factor.

Last February, Ryan said the pair knew they had some sort of in on the new One Direction album.

After the great news, Ryan and Bunetta worked tirelessly during the next three months to write songs for the band.

“It’s the hardest thing to do the simplest thing,” said Ryan about producing and writing music. Afterwards, they went into the studio to produce the songs by adding instruments like the guitar, keyboard and drums.

By the beginning of summer they had about five records done and presented them to Sony who immediately loved it, Ryan said.

Following the excitement, Ryan and the team flew to London for three months to record the vocals of One Direction.

“There is so much work that goes into it and people don’t realize the work it takes,” he said.

Ryan says there are a lot of exciting things around the corner including working on a single for One Direction’s 3D film, coming out next summer from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

As for the rest of the year, he will be working on songs for artists such as Maroon Five to Natasha Bedingfield.

“The list goes on forever. I’m just trying to write great songs,” he said about the big-name artists that he writes for.

Recently, Ryan has written a song called “What A Buzz” for the new Olly Murs album coming out in April 2013.

Another song that he by Ryan that you may hear soon is “All You Need is Love” for DJ Avicii.

Ryan also said he is always trying to stay inspired by finding new songs and sounds and that is how he plans to stay on top of the music game.
