Fairport-Area Community Education Trust held its Community Spelling Bee on March 2 at Johanna Perrin Middle School, featuring 18 adult teams vying for champion in a festive, collaborative atmosphere.
The Minerva Deland School entry, Word Wizards, sponsored by Metrose Custom Homes, took home the victory. In addition to a championship trophy that can be displayed at Minerva Deland, they each received a gift basket compliments of Casa Larga and Wegmans.
Many local organizations sponsored school-based teams or entered their own team. Over $6,400 was raised that will be directed to help K-12 education in the Fairport Central School district, specifically in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math initiatives, arts programming and teacher grants.
Sponsors included Fairport Food and Music Festival, Metrose Custom Homes, Fairport Perinton Chamber of Commerce, AMBuild Company, Fairport Perinton Merchants Association, Friends of Fairport Public Library, Liftbridge Financial Advisors, Crystal Pix, Bates Rich Child Care, Antech, Fairport Savings Bank, JB Sterling, Learning Links of Fairport, Perinton Wegmans, Pelletier Tax and Accounting Service, Lyons National Bank and Fairport Federal Credit Union.
The bee also featured local radio personality Scott Fitzgerald from Fickle 93.3 and Dylan Gillett, FHS English teacher.
