WAYO-FM 104.3 recently completed a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, raising a total of $17,260 on a goal of $16,000, which will cover its first year of fixed operation costs.

The campaign ended at midnight Jan. 12 with 248 backers. This is WAYO’s second successful crowdfunding campaign but the first effort with Kickstarter.

In addition to the proceeds from the Kickstarter campaign, the all-volunteer-run station raised $1,521 from a week of pop-up fundraisers around Rochester that included a clothing swap, concerts and an open house Jan. 10 at the station. The additional funds will be directly applied to remodeling WAYO’s live performance space. This is especially beneficial to the station’s capacity to fully function, because it hosts live performances by Rochester-based musicians, and many of the station’s programmers are musicians, comedians, artists and other creative people.

WAYO is a noncommercial, volunteer-run, low-power radio station located in Rochester. It started streaming live online at wayofm.org Nov. 30, 2015, and began radio broadcasting at 104.3 FM on Jan. 4. The station encompasses a diverse group of programmers and programs, including music of all kinds, original comedic and dramatic performance, interesting and relevant talk and experimentation. As a "free-form" station, the creative decision-making is put in the hands of the programmers rather than a central format or playlist.
