Four Gates Chili High School music students were recently selected for the New York State School Music Association All-State music ensembles.
Ivana-Re Baldie, Women’s Choir alto; Ashley Bonet, Women’s Choir soprano; Orlando Boxx, Mixed Chorus tenor; and Meshach Cornelius, Symphonic Band percussion alternate, spent countless hours last spring preparing a NYSSMA Level VI solo on their primary instruments.
The students are led by music teachers Christine Merkel and Jeff Welch.
Over 6,500 sophomore and juniors from across the state prepared for All-State evaluations in the hope of being selected. Their solos were evaluated by a NYSSMA-certified All-State adjudicator. The adjudicators then create a rank-ordered proficiency list of all students being recommended by score first, with the 100s ahead of the 99s, etc. All selected students and alternates are notified by mail in late August and asked to return acceptance forms.
Students are expected to prepare their All-State music with as much care and attention to detail as was given in preparation for their audition last spring. The students will attend the four-day long festival in downtown Rochester in early December working with a guest conductor and performing Dec. 4 at the Eastman Theater.
