Don Pawlaczyk, a Navy veteran who served in the Korean War, recently visited Eastridge High School students who wrote to veterans going to Washington, D.C. for Honor Flight.

Students in Kelly Huss’ class compose letters for the veterans who participate in Honor Flight every year. When the flight returns from D.C., a large contingent from Eastridge are there to greet them.

Pawlaczyk decided to thank the students who wrote to him, so he came to the school to answer some of their questions in person. He spent the morning telling the students about what life was like for him on a destroyer, the ordeal of boot camp and some of the funny and not-so-funny stories about being at sea.

The Q&A served as a living history lesson and let the students know that their efforts were truly appreciated.

Other teachers involved in helping with the letter writing are Joe Trujillo, Nicole Checchi, Jennifer Birdsong-Ng and Lindsay Canon. The East Irondequoit Teachers Association recently held a fundraiser to pay for two veterans to go on the flight this fall.
