Alfred University women’s volleyball’s Amber Smith, Penfield resident and Webster Schroeder High School graduate, recently was selected as an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III North Women’s Volleyball All-Star First Team member.
Smith, an outside hitter for the Saxons, was earlier selected as the Co-Rookie of the Year by the Empire 8 Athletic Conference. She shared the honor with Stevens Institute of Technology’s Casey King. Smith is Alfred University’s first ever Rookie of the Year by the Empire 8, first ever First Team All-Empire 8 selection and now the first ever ECAC Division III North First Team All-Star.
In the ECAC North, only Joelle Goldstein of Ithaca College joined Smith in the selections. Stevens had Mary Tobin and Brianna Perez make First and Second Team, respectively in the ECAC Metro while head coach Glenn DeHaven was the Coach of the Year.
Smith led the Empire 8 in kills this season with 369 and 110 in Empire 8 Conference Play, while finishing second in kills per set with 3.51. She had 155 more kills than King overall and 59 more in conference action while she averaged 0.69 and 0.44 more kills per set.
Smith was selected as the Empire 8 Rookie of the Week twice, on Sept. 6 and Oct. 31 and was the Athlete of the Week on both of those weeks as well. She also was named the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Corvias Division III North Rookie of the Week as well. Smith was selected to the 2016 SUNY Cortland All-Tournament Team.
Smith helped the Saxons record the best season record overall and in Empire 8 action this season as they went 12-17 and 3-5. The last team that had an equal or better record was the 2000 team that went 26-15 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
She led the Saxons in points with 412.5 points per set, with 3.93 kills per set and hitting percentage with a .194. Smith was tied for second in solo blocks with nine and was third in digs with 327 and digs per set with 3.11. She was fourth on the team in block assists with 31 and total blocks with 40. She ended the season with 19 aces and 18 set assists.
Smith set her career-best in kills in a single match with 23 against SUNY Polytechnic during the season-closer on Oct. 29. Her single match best in digs is 24 which was set against Wells College on Sept. 3 during the Cortland Tournament where she also established her collegiate career-high in total blocks with one solo and five assisted.
