The Rochester Christian Reformed Church Knitting Ministry donated its work to area agencies.
At the beginning of December, members gathered to sort and bag items to be delivered before Christmas. Agencies that received clothing include: Rochester City elementary schools, 226 hats and mittens; city family health clinics, 32 pieces of baby clothing; Open Door and Family missions, 78 pieces including hats, mittens, scarves and slippers; and Livonia and Williamson migrant agencies, 30 hats and scarves.
The group also donated 31 chemotherapy hats and three Bay Trail mitten trees.
The knitting began at least 20 years ago by Hermien Bouwmeester as she knitted throughout the year for people who were not able to buy warm items for themselves or their children. Interested church friends and family members began to donate yarn as a way to participate in Bouwmeester’s work when they couldn’t knit themselves. Later, more church friends added to Bouwmeester’s work and the RCRC Knitting Ministry was started.
