Mary Cariola Children’s Center recently expanded its Bailey Road Residential Home to host its therapeutic respite program, the first in the state.

The program will allow the center to serve numerous youth with severe behavioral issues and their families. Respite services are rarely available locally for families who not it most, because most local programs are not designed, staffed or equipped for children and youth with significant maladaptive behaviors and who require one-on-one support.

All individuals will start a series of weeklong stays at the home. The center’s interdisciplinary treatment team and residential staff will provide structured routines and skill-building exercises while family members receive a reprieve from caregiving responsibilities.

Families will also coordinate with staff to make home environmental modifications and practice positive behavioral strategies.
