The American Red Cross is recognizing its volunteers with events during Red Cross Month in March.
“March is Red Cross Month, the perfect time to honor our Red Cross volunteers, blood donors and financial contributors who bring hope to people facing life’s emergencies,” said James Love, executive director of the Greater Rochester Chapter. “During Red Cross Month, we thank them for their tremendous support.”
The Greater Rochester Chapter has a number of activities planned for Red Cross Month. It will host an overview presentation at 8:30 a.m. March 21 at Louis S. Wolk Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester, 1200 Edgewood Ave., Rochester, and a military family salute brunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 25 at The Wintergarden by Monroe’s, 1 Bausch and Lomb Place, Rochester. Its recent Fire and Ice Gala raised $68,000 to support Red Cross services.
Red Cross disaster workers respond to a community disaster every eight minutes, providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities to those affected. They provide 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families at home and around the world.
The Red Cross must collect nearly 14,000 donations of blood every day to meet patient needs. It trains millions of people in first aid, water safety and other lifesaving skills, and it supports the vaccination of children around the globe against measles and rubella.
The Greater Rochester Chapter installed 762 smoke alarms at no cost as part of the Home Fire Campaign, responded to 368 local emergencies, assisted 680 military families, trained 17,452 people in lifesaving skills and received 44,888 donated units of blood in 2016.
“It’s easy to become a Red Cross community hero,” Love said. “Be ready for an emergency by creating a preparedness plan for your home. Test your smoke detectors and tell your neighbors to do the same. Or sign up to be a Red Cross volunteer or make a financial donation.”
March has been recognized as Red Cross Month for more than 70 years. Presidents have designated March as Red Cross Month to recognize how the American Red Cross helps people across the country and around the world.
