The Rochester Edge girls 14 and younger ice hockey team recently won the New York State Amateur Hockey Association Tier II State Championship in Amherst.
The team will now represent the state in the USA Hockey National Championships. The girls played five games and outscored their opponents 29-3.
The tournament preliminary round started with a 4-0 win over third-ranked North Country Wild from Plattsburgh. Goals came from Katie Diem, Rachel Corbett and Emma Corbett, who scored two.
Rochester Edge completed the preliminary round with two additional wins over teams from Depew and Skaneateles. The offense outscored the two teams 17-2.
Seeded first in its semifinal bracket, the team drew longtime rival, fifth-ranked Potsdam Ice Storm. The Edge girls were looking to avenge last year’s 2-1 overtime loss in the NYSAHA Championship final. The Edge came out strong in the first period and built a 3-0 lead going into the second period with the final tally being 4-0. Goals were scored by Erin McCarthy with two, Rachel Corbett and Ariel Williamson.
All of the girls’ hard work led to the championship game against the second-ranked Hamburg Lady Hawks. After two periods, the Edge went into the locker room leading 1-0 on a goal from McCarthy. The Edge took control in the third period, adding more goals from Williamson, Cassidy Rockwood and Emma Corbett. The final was a 4-1 victory and another NYSAHA Championship title for the Edge girls program.
Forwards Bella Baker, Bella Callahan, Rachel Corbett, Diem, Maya Green, McCarthy, Lian Sydorowicz, Abigail Wiesenberg, Ariel Williamson, Emily Yackel and Adelle Young all recorded points over the course of the tournament. The Edge had strong defensive play from Katie Barton, Emma Corbett, Autumn Mish, Grace Monette, Rockwood and Rebecca Ryan.
The girls held their opponents to less than 12 shots per game. Edge’s goaltending performed consistently throughout the weekend. Lucy Robertelli stopped all 31 shots that she faced throughout the weekend. Rachel Brase had an 89 percent save percentage.
The Edge girls were prepared by coaches Maggie Benson, Mike Benson, Ned Corbett, Sheridan Mish, Paul Monette, Eric Wiesenberg, Kevin Yackel and team manager Michael Young.
The Edge will now move on to the USA Hockey National Championships the first week in April in Troy, Michigan.
