Two rescued from ice floe in Webster
Firefighters and the Coast Guard had to make quick work Saturday afternoon to save a man and woman stuck on floating ice on Lake Ontario.
It happened around 2 p.m. near the Webster Pier. Fire officials say the two went out onto the ice - which broke away from a pack and started drifting.
After about an hour, first responders were able to get them onto a boat and safely to shore.
The event prompted a reminder from Webster Fire Chief Chris Smith:
"There's no reason to be on the ice on the lake in the winter. We had over over probably 80 people tied up and a county special operations unit coming as a backup plan. So about 80 people were involved today where if they just stayed off the ice we wouldn't have had this problem."
Ultimately, the chief says, the two people were lucky Saturday.
