Spencerport Central School District will host Operation Safe Stop at 10 a.m. April 27 behind Cosgrove Middle School, 2707 Spencerport Road, Spencerport.
The event, held in partnership with New York Association for Pupil Transportation and Rochester Area Transportation Supervisors Association, is designed to raise awareness of the dangers of motorists passing a stopped school bus. Operation Safe Stop Education and Enforcement Day is April 27.
Local police, emergency agencies, bus drivers and civic leaders will hold a press conference and a re-enactment of a pedestrian bus accident at the event.
As many as 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York state school buses daily.
It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus when the large red lights located on top of the bus are flashing. Flashing lights mean the bus is picking up or discharging students.
Drivers must stop whether they are approaching the school bus from the front or overtaking it from the rear. All must stop for flashing red lights, even on divided and multilane highways and on school grounds.
