The summer has arrived with a pattern of sunny days and rainy days. My hope is that you and your family are enjoying some lazy days of summer before school reopens in September. Despite our students and staff being on summer break, things are just as busy here on Gates Chili Central School District campuses.
The Class of 2017 commencement ceremony was a true celebration of all that our graduates have accomplished. They are an impressive group of young men and women, and they have demonstrated their loyalty to each other and to their school. We will be anxious to hear all about their journey as they enter colleges and/or careers We are proud of our Spartan graduates.
The summer months are some of the busiest of the year here in GCCSD. Summer school opportunities for our students include extensions of the school year to help our students increase proficiency in literacy and math. We are also offering our summer free meals program Mondays through Fridays for breakfast and lunch at Gates Chili High School, Door No. 50. If you need more information, please call 585-247-7213.
We are busy preparing for the new school year set to begin Sept. 5 for staff and Sept. 6 for all students. This summer has been packed full of curriculum development, professional development and summer workshops for our staff. In late June, the administrative team had a two and one half day retreat. The Father’s House hosted our first afternoon to view the Nova film broadcast on PBS, titled “School of the Future.” We used this documentary to guide our work around the district’s newest initiative toward digital conversion and 1-to-1 computing devices for every student. Technology and the computer should be a tool to drive best instructional practices. We finished our retreat with a book study of George Curous’ book, “The Innovator’s Mindset,” in anticipation of Curous’ visit to Spencerport and Gates Chili in October.
The board of education participated in a two-day retreat in July to support this important work. They will identify updated goals and strategies for the district that will help each building, each principal, each staff member and each student develop goals that are truly aligned throughout the district.
We are excited to see all our students and staff return for a year of learning that points to improved academic achievement. We will focus on student-centered to improve academic achievement. We will dream big, take risks and believe that every child can learn by engaging and empowering the brain. Our senior Class of 2018 will certainly lead the way for a very successful school year preparing them for college and career readiness.
Be sure to check out my Twitter account, @gateshilisupt, for a view into our buildings and district all year long. Our hope is to brand our district by telling our school stories. This effort will improve communication, increase Spartan pride and showcase the outstanding educational opportunities the district offers. If you have not viewed our series of videos on the website, I invite you to do so. These are opportunities for us to share all the remarkable things that are happening in the district — much to be proud of.
Our newsletter will no longer be printed and mailed home; our website will feature the many contents you are accustomed to seeing in the newsletter, along with a district calendar that will keep track of events and activities in real time.
The board of education conducted its reorganization meeting in July. The next summer board of education meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 22 in the Administration Building. We will resume our normal meeting dates and times in September. Starting in July, we will feature formal reports from our SEI architects and our construction management firm, Watchdog, to provide updates and information as we plan for Phase 1 of the Capital Improvement Project. Planning has already begun for the initial track and stadium work anticipated to begin in summer 2018 along with building level committee meetings to ensure that we have aligned programs to the capital improvement needs throughout the district.
It is a pleasure and an honor to serve as the superintendent of Gates Chili Central School District. Enjoy the rest of the summer, and I look forward to seeing you this fall. Be sure to save the date, homecoming is early this year with many events and activities starting the week of Sept. 18.
