Classic cars of all shapes, sizes and ages take to Main Street
CANANDAIGUA — For Larry DiLullo, the idea of cruising in a classic car down a small-town Main Street was something he wanted to do for a long time.
The idea first came from the annual Woodward Dream Cruise in Michigan, where classic cars travel through multiple cities every August, often splitting the funds from sponsors and entrants between each of the cities and the nonprofit overseeing the event.
As a result of the Dream Cruise’s continual success, DiLullo, who oversees the car enthusiast group, Rev On Car Events, had a similar goal for here, hoping to evoke the car cruises of years past.
The Wheels in Motion Car Cruise event Saturday in downtown Canandaigua featured multiple classic cars from different eras, driving on Main Street before turning onto Routes 5 and 20, with a small loop along Canandaigua Lake before heading back to Main Street. The cruising began at 3:30 p.m.
According to Denise Chaapel, manager of Canandaigua’s Business Improvement District, the idea behind the cruise began when DiLullo first approached her about his vision.
“I said, ‘Let’s see if we can pull it off.’ Through a lot of cooperation, with City Council approving it, and the police department with assistance as far as the route and things along that line, we pulled it off and look to grow it each year,” Chaapel said.
Chaapel also noted how one of the goals of having classic cars travel up and down Main Street in the 8-mile loop was to take people back in time, “when they used to just go up and down the road, and show off their cars, and jab at each other.”
With the support of the Business Improvement District office and the rest of downtown Canandaigua, DiLullo hopes to turn the cruise “into a real nice summer event,” something that can be done annually. This also might draw in more car aficionados to travel along streets featuring many historic Canandaigua buildings, he said.
Robert Fredericks, better known as “DJ Bobby Rocker” for his work as a disc jockey at multiple car shows during the summer months, participated. He brought a 1969 red Mercury Cougar convertible to drive.
Classic automobiles have been a passion of his since he was 5 years old. Now, with three classic cars to his name, he finds the hobby to be a true “labor of love,” with events like the Wheels in Motion Car Cruise providing an excellent outlet for the car community, he said.
