Broccolo Tree and Lawn Care recently celebrated the grand opening of B-friendly Farm at Broccolo Garden Center in Penfield.
The farm features various interactive activities such as a butterfly house, a chicken coop with laying hens, honey bees, nature trails for birding and exploring and wildflower fields.
B-friendly Farm is an eco-friendly educational destination that supports agricultural production and biodiversity within the Rochester community. It was built at Broccolo Garden Center so that visitors can observe and learn about butterfly life cycles, explore winding trails, enjoy birding opportunities and buy local honey products.
Other features include a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation-regulated stormwater creek with a naturalized irrigation pond as well as acres of hops and soybeans planted by local farmers.
The farm was constructed using environmentally sustainable materials and landscaping, including no-mow zones, permeable pavers, walkways made of recycled tires, rain barrels and a green roof. All garden spaces are managed without the use of pesticides through integrated pest management practices.
Broccolo Tree and Lawn Care partnered with Seneca Park Zoo’s Butterfly Beltway program to plant its Butterfly Garden with guests during the grand opening, followed by an educational seminar on the importance of protecting native plants and pollinators.
B-friendly Farm will offer bimonthly educational programs for the community throughout the year, except for when Broccolo Garden Center closes for the winter season Nov. 23-March 17, 2018.
“This is a day we have been looking forward to for quite some time,” said Laurie Broccolo, owner and CEO. “We are thrilled to offer the community an eco-friendly space dedicated to environmental play, exploration and education. Visitors and environmental enthusiasts will be able to further explore nature through real-world examples and educational programs, all designed to help protect local resources within the Rochester community and beyond.”
