Pittsford Mendon Lady Vikings came away with a 2-0 shutout against the Canandaigua Braves on Oct. 5.
The win was a double celebration, as the team also honored their graduating seniors at the beginning of their last home game of the season. Mendon’s six seniors are Carly Brister, captain; Katie Broikos, captain; Emily Latulipe; Claire Mezzoprete, captain; Lindsay Penrose; and Mackenzie Schmidt.
Both teams battled for control in the middle, as the opponents fought to a draw in the first half. Saves by Braves’ keeper, Maddie Green, fended off multiple shots on goal by Brister; Nora Anderson, junior; and Sara O’Hara, sophomore. Vikings Addie Bryson and Rachel Renzie, sophomores, contributed defensively to impede the Braves scoring attempts.
Midfielders Hanna Sertl and Lisa Abe, juniors; and Mezzoprete were moving the ball forward, creating scoring opportunities for sophomores Emma Schaefer and Sierra Kreinke and Schmidt. The defensive line, Broikos, Latulipe, Penrose and sophomore Abbey Smith limited the Braves to one shot on goal.
Midway through the second half, Kacie Mooney, sophomore, surged past the Braves’ last defender, sending it past the keeper’s fingertips to put the Vikings on the board. Grace O’Hara, freshman, completed the shutout with a shot from inside the 18, deflecting into the corner for the final score. Ary Lougher-Harris posted her fifth shutout of the season with one save for Mendon.
