Twenty-five students from Gates Chili Middle School and Gates Chili High School recently competed in a Latin academic challenge at Pittsford Sutherland High School.
The students competed among 280 students from East Aurora, Pittsford Mendon, Pittsford Sutherland, Calkins Road MS, Barker Road MS, Albion, Mount Mercy Academy, Our Lady of Mercy, Skaneateles, Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, Orchard Park, Amherst and Indian River.
Students took individual academic tests in Roman civilization, derivatives, mythology, Latin vocabulary and Pentathlon, a combination of all.
Sophomore Ajay Bhattacharrya and junior Michael Herweg took first-place in the Certamen’s Latin 3 category.
Bhattacharrya and junior Kyle Lincoln won second place in Roman civilization and first place in the mythology tests.
In the Pentathlon, Bhattacharrya won first place, eighth-grader Spencer Anderson took second place and Lincoln placed third.
Bhattacharrya took first place in the derivatives category. Herwig, freshman Carlos Ramirez and eighth-grader Loryn Sutliff placed second, and Lincoln won third place.
Freshman Elise Christopher, Herweg and Lincoln took second place in the vocabulary tests.
