If there is one thing Michelle Munnings, PTA president at Autumn Lane Elementary School, knows about young children, it’s that they love to run.
That knowledge inspired the recent Earning for Learning fun run/walk to benefit the school’s PTA.
“I know these children love to move, so I thought, ‘Why not raise money for our school and run at the same time?’” Munnings said.
Earning for Learning took place on school grounds, and was coordinated with help from Autumn Lane physical education teacher Tara Giordano. Students learned about the quarter-mile course during PE classes.
“I can’t think of a more fun and healthy way to celebrate what the students have done for their school,” Giordano said. “It’s perfect.”
The actual event took place during PE classes. Students were encouraged to run or walk, and were reminded that it was not a race. Their faces lit up with smiles as they walked to the field to start their course. They were thrilled to see parent volunteers, colorful fields and healthy snacks.
“For about two weeks after we finished the fun run, students would still come to PE and ask, ‘When are we doing another fun run?’” Giordano said. “They had so much fun.”
Munnings said the PTA raised enough money to pay for each student’s grade level field trip.
