The Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester is one of nine organizations recently selected to join 43 others in a national Jewish legacy giving program that, to date, has secured more than 15,700 after-lifetime commitments with an estimated value of more than $500 million for communities across North America.
The Foundation, the planned giving program of Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester, will partner with Harold Grinspoon Foundation through Life & Legacy to start a community legacy giving program, creating a shared goal for the organizations to work toward.
“Life & Legacy is truly a game changer for our community,” said Don Onimus, program co-chairman. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for growth, and we can’t wait to get started.”
The Foundation will administer the program on behalf of the Rochester Jewish community, and will fund program expenses. It will partner with local organizations through the four-year program that provides coaching, training and incentive grants to ensure that legacy giving becomes integrated in the philanthropic culture of the community.
“The Federation is the perfect organization to administer and support this program, because of its mission to build a strong Jewish future,” said Leslie Crane, program co-chairman. “There is no better way of fulfilling this mission than by providing agencies and synagogues with the opportunity to build endowments and donor relationships that will extend to last in perpetuity.”
As a participant in Life & Legacy’s 2017-21 cohort, The Foundation will receive a grant from the Grinspoon Foundation with matching funds of approximately $100,000 each year to provide participating local organizations with the opportunity to receive unrestricted incentive grants based on meeting legacy commitment benchmarks.
Life & Legacy is the newest initiative of HGF, which is investing $30 million over a 10-year period to preserve vibrant Jewish life for future generations by ensuring the long-term financial health of Jewish community organizations in cities across North America, including Rochester.
“Providing Jewish communities with proven tools and training to help them secure their long-term financial goals is absolutely vital,” said Harold Grinspoon, founder of HGF. “Through the Life & Legacy program, I’m hopeful that we will be able to help sustain vibrant communities that allow future generations to enjoy our rich Jewish culture and heritage.”
