Do you believe that a busy person accomplishes more? There is a saying that if you want something done, ask a busy person. I believe that to be true, and Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf is an excellent example.
Shirley Munson is our secretary responsible for board meetings, but she also handles all correspondence (she used to be treasurer also), helps with the newsletter and with the Thanksgiving Basket program. If you purchase books from the Greece Volunteer Library Store, you will see her there. She also volunteers at her church. Is she busy? Obviously. But, if I needed to have something done, I would ask her.
Another person is Molly Ives, who verifies for the GEFS and does the scheduling for the verifiers. She has held offices in her garden club while remaining an active member of her church. When any friend is in need, Molly is there to help out; yes, I would also ask her if I needed assistance.
You would likely know these names, too — Betty Griswold, Sue Ericson, Polly McCubbin, Jon Kuppinger, Carol Coons, Kate LaBarca, Amy Peritsky … I could go on, because GEFS has almost 200 volunteers who keep the program running smoothly; and, yes, they are all busy people. They represent churches, garden clubs, organizations like Kiwanis and Rotary as well as individuals.
Another busy group — the Greece Teachers’ Association, who works tirelessly in all aspects of our students’ lives. GTA collected 9,754 pounds of food and $163 in cash in the Stuff a Bus program. Arcadia High School collected the most for high schools — 2,954 pounds — and Pine Brook collected the most in the elementary category with 806 pounds of food. Thank you to the kids, the parents, the teachers and all staff members.
Free summer meals were offered again this year. The location site was Autumn Lane Elementary School from July 10- Aug. 18. GEFS met with Greece Central School District several years ago to encourage this program free to all Greece children ages 18 and younger and at reduced prices for other residents.
How long have busy people kept the GEFS running smoothly? It was 40 years in October, and at that time we honored those who give so willingly of their time. Almost 200 volunteers keep the program running smoothly, but we can always use more help, especially drivers.
