Music teachers at Churchville-Chili Middle School recently partnered with Foodlink and local churches to collect food for Thanksgiving baskets that went to families across Monroe County.
Shelley Sadler, seventh-grade band director, worked with her colleagues in the music department to organize and run a three-week food collection. Students in grades 5-8 brought stuffing mix or cranberry sauce to their music classes. Chorus, band and orchestra students helped with donations.
There was a friendly competition to see which class could collect the most food. The fifth- and sixth-grade band room won by collecting over 100 boxes of stuffing and 70 cans of cranberry sauce. Teachers in the winning classroom are Mary O’Connor and Christie Ricker.
Second place went to Elise Provenzano’s seventh- and eighth-grade chorus. Other participating teachers were Phyl Contestable, Chelsea Hill and David Ciarvella.
The event collected 180 boxes of stuffing and 136 cans of cranberry sauce. Those donations were added to others across the county, allowing Foodlink to create 1,060 baskets for families in need across Greater Rochester.
