Pat Pauly’s colorful quilt titled “Water, Earth 5” is on view in the annual “Quilts = Art = Quilt” juried exhibition at Schweinfurth Art Center, 205 Genesee St., Auburn.
The Rochester artist’s quilt was selected for the exhibit from 326 entries. The exhibit features 64 other artists from all over the world, including Israel, Belgium, the U.K, Switzerland and Canada.
The annual exhibit attracts competition from world-renowned quilt makers. Pauly’s quilts stand out at an international level, as her work has been chosen to be in the exhibition nearly 13 years in a row.
Pauly is a teacher, lecturer and artist known for her bold hand-dyed fabrics and art quilts. In addition to displaying her quilt in the exhibition, Pauly did a trunk show where she brought in a large body of work and discussed how her artwork has developed over the years.
There are many recurring forms in Pauly’s quilts, such as a “mummy bag,” leaves, circles and X shapes. Pauly uses this abstract imagery paired with bold colors as archetypes to play with concepts such as war, nature and, in the case of “Water, Earth 5,” she specifically is interested in climate change.
Pauly will share her wealth of knowledge on dyeing and printing fabric in a three-day workshop at Schweinfurth on Sept. 21-23, 2018.
The exhibition will be on display through Jan. 7, 2018. Admission is $10 or free for ages 11 and younger.
Schweinfurth is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays-Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The gallery is closed on major holidays, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and between exhibitions.
