The Mendon Public Library recently announced its upcoming programs.
Firefly Friends: Start with Your Heart (Wing four-blue patch): 12:30 to 1:05 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. For ages 2-5 with parent or caregiver. Firefly Friends is geared toward helping little ones to shine bright lights. Classes to be led by Jennifer DeVille Catalano. Suggested fee for four-week wing is $10. Scholarships are available. Martin Luther King Day Story Time: Stone Soup retelling: 10 to 11 a.m. on Jan. 15. Join local author Sueann Wells for a special, tolerance-themed retelling of Stone Soup. Geared towards preschoolers to sixth-graders, SueAnn will lead a story time with a felt-board interactive activity and anti-bullying discussion. Author Talk by Gwenn Voelckers: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 25. Join local author Gwenn Voelckers as she reads excerpts from her new book, “Alone and Content.” Following her remarks, Voelckers will answer questions from the audience. MPL Teen Advisory meeting: Poetry Night: 7 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 25. Middle and high school students, meet with the MPL Teen Advisory Board. The board will work on poetry under the expert direction of Joan Haviland. Call to register, (585) 624-6067.
Babysitter Course for 11-year-olds and older taught by EPICTrainingsday: 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 20. Taught through classroom discussion, instructor-led lecture and supplemented by an interactive video presentation, this five-hour class teaches participants the roles and responsibilities of a babysitter including skills in accident prevention, first aid and abdominal thrusts for choking victims. Each student will receive a workbook and a certification card upon completion. Students are encouraged to bring a self addressed stamped envelope to class. Course will be taught by EPIC Trainings. Registration required. Fee to be paid at time of registration with $45 cash or check to EPIC Trainings. MPL to provide free pizza lunch. Must have eight students to hold class.

Technology Training: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. For adults wanting to learn about laptops, tablets, e-readers, iPads and more. Have a question? Story time: 10 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays. For toddlers to preschoolers. Meet for stories and more. These times will encourage early literacy, a love of books and being read to, following simple directions, taking turns, being part of a group and being a good listener. No registration necessary.
Building Buddies: 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursdays. For toddlers to preschoolers. This combination story time and play time fosters early literacy, social skills, creativity, fine motor skills and parallel play among young children. Grown-ups can socialize or browse through a magazine or newspaper in the Jacobs Family Reading Room, while children play with building blocks. No registration necessary.
The Knit Nook: 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays. For all ages and all abilities, this knitting group is all about fellowship. Learn to knit a simple project or bring one that’s in progress. New knitters will receive No. 7 needles and acrylic yarn. Experienced knitters can bring their own needles, yarn and projects. Books and magazines with antique and current knitting ideas will be available. No registration necessary.
Also, the Mendon Public Library’s new library hours will be 9 a.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
