Bay Trail Middle School Drama Club will perform the pop-rock musical comedy “Xanadu Jr.” at 7 p.m. on March 8-10 and 2 p.m. on March 11 in the Bay Trail Auditorium,1750 Scribner Road, Penfield.
“Xanadu Jr.” is set in 1980, done in the style of a classic Greek tragedy and follows a Greek Muse named Kira who chooses to help and guide an artist. The musical comedy features an original hit score by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, which includes songs like “Magic,” “All Over The World,” “Suddenly,” “I’m Alive,” “Evil Woman,” “Have You Never Been Mellow” and “Xanadu.”
“The Bay Trail musical cast, crew, and creative team have been working together since November to bring this vibrant musical story to life,” said Producer Shelly Lamanna. This year’s production involves over 70 students in grades six through eight.
“Not only are the students learning to put together an incredibly complex work of artistic expression, they are also learning about history, culture, society, relationships, overcoming obstacles, staying positive and lots of new vocabulary, to boot,” said Director Kerry Young.
“This show involves some of the most complex musical part work we’ve ever done in a musical at Bay Trail,” said Music Director Sam Dzuranin. “Students are tackling three part harmony while rocking some pretty challenging (and fun) ’80s dance moves.”
Technical Director Matt Doi also created the school’s first raised platform to accommodate the tiered staging for the cast.
