Rayson-Miller Post 899 is holding its baseball guitar raffle fundraiser through July 4.
Proceeds will go toward new uniforms for the sponsored Rayson-Miller American Legion baseball team. Players are still sporting the uniforms purchased in 1996, which have outlived their serviceability with much mending, patching and zipper replacements.
The raffle offers an opportunity to win an original, custom American Legion 100th anniversary double cutaway telecaster electric guitar with case.
The American Legion Baseball League started in 1925. The Rayson-Miller team joined the league in District 7 in 1973. The team includes men ages 13-19 from Pittsford Mendon High School, Pittsford Sutherland HS, McQuaid Jesuit HS, Aquinas Institute, Batavia Notre Dame HS, Honeoye Falls-Lima HS and Gananda’s Ruben A Cirillo High School. Tom Sapienza has served as team manager and coach since its inception.
The team looks for commitment in its players. Rayson-Miller Post 899 understands that faith, parents, work and school are priorities; however, candidates must understand that dependability and commitment to the team are important aspects for making the Rayson-Miller roster.
The league has positive impacts within major league baseball, turning out many MLB players, managers and commissioners. It has more than 60 program graduates in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The league annually awards a minimum of $25,000 in college scholarships, $500 for a player selected from each state based upon leadership, character, scholastic achievement and financial need. Some individual states may award more.
League play for Rayson-Miller baseball lasts about seven weeks, and starts around the first week of June after high school baseball season. District 7 playoffs start in late July. Visit bit.ly/2FK4ODg to view league schedules.
Raffle tickets cost $5 each, $10 for three and $20 for seven. Tickets are available by phone and through players, alumni and Rayson-Miller Post members. Online purchases will be available after June 18. Uniform sponsorships are available.
Winners will be drawn at 1 p.m. on July 4 at Pittsford Veterans Memorial, 22 N. Main St.
