The Mount Hope World Singers, in collaboration with guitarist Austin Wahl, will present a concert titled “Tragedy and Triumph” at 7 p.m. on May 6 at Atonement Lutheran Church, 1900 Westfall Road, Rochester.
The Mount Hope World Singers will be accompanied by Cathy Cohen on piano, Alyssa Rodriguez on violin, Don Sherman on percussion and Austin Wahl on guitar.
The Mount Hope World Singers are volunteer singers from the Rochester area who are conducted by Brian White. White holds a bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music. He has worked with the Mount Hope World Singers since 2015 and is the instrumental director at the Aquinas Institute of Rochester.
Selections by the Mount Hope World Singers include folk songs, traditional melodies and newer compositions from various countries and cultures, sung in their original languages.
Guitarist Austin Wahl was born and raised in Minneapolis. From age 5 until age 18, he studied with Alan Johnston, a founding member of the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Dr. Nicholas Goluses. Wahl is currently working toward a Doctor of Musical Arts at Eastman. He has won top prizes in competitions in Minnesota, New York, Kentucky, South Carolina, Texas, Ontario, Indiana, and Quebec. In addition to classical, Wahl also plays bluegrass guitar and mandolin, and has built his own electric guitar — the Wahl-o-Caster. He has visited 42 states, eight countries, and thirteen American national parks.
Wahl will perform selections by Miguel Llobet and J.S. Bach, and accompany readings by Mary Lee Miller.
