Christian Theological Seminary recently awarded over $39,000 in grant funds to Gates Presbyterian Church for its administration of the Lilly Endowment National Clergy Renewal program.
The 2017 program allows congregations to support their pastors with the gift of extended time away from ministerial duties and responsibilities for reflection and renewal. The grant — titled “In the Company of Strangers” — supports the Rev. Dr. Melissa DeRosia’s sabbatical while the congregation engages in interfaith learning with Jewish and Muslim communities.
GPC congregants will learn the tenants of the Jewish and Muslim faiths, participate in Jewish and Islamic worship services and experience authentic Jewish and Middle Eastern meals. A rabbi from Temple Sinai and an imam from Islamic Center of Rochester, both in Brighton, will visit GPC and lead Sunday worship.
DeRosia will travel to Stony Point Center, a multifaith community in Stony Point, as well as the Negril Charge of Churches in Jamaica, Jerusalem and the Chautauqua Institute in Chautauqua.
With this award from the Lilly endowment, GPC will build lasting interfaith relationships and provide future opportunities for interfaith ministries. Call (585) 247-5292, email office@gatespres.org or visit gatespres.org for information.
