The sex crime charges against Mark R. Buechler are so bad the punishment, if he's found guilty, is equivalent to first-degree murder.

Buechler pleaded not guilty in the courtroom of Judge Sam Valleriani Thursday morning.

In the 29-count indictment, Buechler is charged with sex abuse, criminal sexual act, predatory sexual assault, possession of child pornography, and production of child pornography.

The District Attorney's office says the abuse started in 2010 and continued until May 3 of this year.

Messenger Post's news partner, News10NBC's Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean was in court when Buechler was arraigned.
