Penfield Public Library announces summer weekend hours: The Penfield Public Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays effective June 23 through Aug. 25. The exception will be June 30 when the library is closed for the townwide parade in celebration of Independence Day. The library will be closed Sundays effective June 24 through Aug. 26.
Penfield Public Library closed July 4: The Penfield Public Library will be closed July 4 in celebration of Independence Day. The library will be open regular hours from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on July 3 and 5.
Health care Navigator Session: 4:30 to 8 p.m. on July 3. A certified application counselor will be present to help individuals enroll in health insurance through the New York State of Health Marketplace. Bring ID, previous year’s tax return and Social Security numbers and birth dates for all family members you will be enrolling. Even though open enrollment has ended, individuals can still apply for Child Health Plus, Medicaid, Essential Plan, or if they have had a life qualifying event within past 60 days. This does not pertain to Medicare. All appointments are scheduled by calling (585) 613-7662.

“Dunkirk”: 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. on July 5. The movie is 105 minutes and rated PG-13. This World War II thriller about the evacuation of allied troops from the French city of Dunkirk, France, before Nazi forces can take hold, is directed and written by Christopher Nolan. It stars Fionn Whitehead, Barry Keoghan and Mark Rylance. Registration

“Saving Private Ryan”: 5:45 to 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 2. The film is 169 minutes and rated R.
Following the Normandy Landings, a group of U.S. soldiers go behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose brothers have been killed in action. The film was the recipient of five Academy Awards including Steven Spielberg for best director, best film and best actor Tom Hanks. Writer Robert Rodat was nominated for best original screenplay. The film also stars Matt Damon and Tom Sizemore.

Libraries Rock! Summer Reading Game for grades six through 12: June 25 through Aug. 1. Come to the library’s Information desk and get a Libraries Rock! Scratch-Off Ticket each day just for visiting. Participants should also pick up a Libraries Rock! Coupon Book, which contains challenges to complete to earn additional scratch-off ticket. Participants will have the chance to win prizes instantly and to be entered into the weekly prize package raffles.
Action Book Club for grades six through eight: 2:30 to 4 p.m. on July 9 for “My Brigadista Year” by Katherine Patterson; 2:30 to 4 p.m. on July 23 for “The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora” by Pablo Cartaya. Join the club to discuss books with an “Everyday Heroes” theme, celebrating acts of bravery, character and kindness that transform the world in big and small ways. At each meeting, the club will also complete a group community service project. Pick up a copy of the books from the display in the Teen Area and read prior to each meeting.

Libraries Rock! at Penfield Public Library — 2018 Children’s Summer Reading Game:
For children entering kindergarten through sixth grade, child must be present to register.Early registration will occur: from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on June 22. Children also can register the first time they come to play the reading game during any of the regularly scheduled reading game times. Keep track of reading beginning June 25. Write it down and have parents sign it. That can be used toward meeting the contract the first time they play the game.
Reading Game: 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays, 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. and 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, June 25 through Aug. 1. No reading game July 4. To play, participants will need a contract with the children’s librarians to read at least 20 minutes a day, five days a week — children who are not yet reading can be read to. The library fill out the contract when participants come to register. Child must be present to register. Children will also receive a special reading game bag with the official reading calendar and an “Early Bird” bonus activity card. Every day the contract is met, participants earn a coupon that can be redeemed for prizes at our prize table. Each week when they come to play the game, they get one roll of the dice to advance on the game board. For each week the contract is met, participants earn an extra roll of the dice. They will also earn a raffle ticket to enter the weekly prize drawing. And if participants follow the special directions on certain squares, they can earn more raffle tickets. Come in to play each week and pick up a Libraries Rock bonus activity card. Do the activity each week to earn extra coupons.
