Two poles are smack in the center of major roadways, and they should have flags for all to see.

It's an ongoing battle Afghan War veteran Steve McAlpin has been dealing with for years, going up against the Department of Transportation over empty flagpoles.

One is located on Rt. 390. The second is on Culver and the 490 median.

McAlpin says the two poles are smack in the center of major roadways which people pass when they visit the Rochester area and they should have flags for all to see.

But for the last six or seven years, the retired major says they've mainly sat empty.

He says the DOT tells him that they're very busy and don't have the time to check on the flags every month and maintain the medians.

But McAplin says he has even offered to do it himself but hasn't had much success.

"We have a tremendously proud community, not just for veterans, but all Americans in this city do not share that value and make this a priority as we enter this great city or leave it," states McAplin. "Its embarrassing to see no flag on our main flagpole."

News10NBC did reach out to the DOT this Fourth of July and are waiting on a response.

In the meantime, McAplin says he'll keep pushing.
