A field of 63 golfers entered the recent U.S. Amateur Championship Sectional Qualifier, competing for two spots in the 2018 U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California.
Hosted by Deerfield Golf & Country Club in Brockport, the 36-hole competition included the morning’s first round off holes one and 10, with golfers switching sides to start the afternoon’s second round.
Charlie Dann, of Queensland, Australia — the No. 2 ranked amateur Down Under and the 62nd ranked amateur in the world — posted the low score of the morning round, a 4-under-par 68.
Local players made a charge in the afternoon round, including Will Thomson, of Pittsford, who posted a 69 to finish at 1-over 145 for the qualifier; Evan Gaesser, of Kendall, who shot a second round 69, finishing at 1-under-par 143; and Christian Chapman, of Victor, whose 72 left him at 1-over 145 for the day.
By the end of the day, it was Dann who emerged the qualifying medalist, finishing with a 72 for a 36-hole total of 4-under-par 140. Finishing with the second qualifying position was Brian Clark, of Knoxville, Tennessee, who posted rounds of 71-71 for a 2-under-par 142.
Gaesser and Brandon Wu, of Scarsdale, finished in a tie for third at 1-under-par 143, then entered a sudden-death playoff to determine who would be the first and second alternates. Gaesser won first alternate honors on the third hole of the playoff.
Other local golfers among the top 10 finishers included Thomson (T5, 76-69 — 145), Chapman (T5, 73-72 — 145) and Patrick Dipasquale, of Pittsford, (T10, 73-75 — 148).
Dann and Clark will advance to the 118th U.S. AmateurChampionship on Aug. 13-19.
