Summer weekend hours: The Penfield Public Library is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays through Aug. 25. The library is closed Sundays effective through Aug. 26.
Libraries Rock! Summer Reading Game: through Aug. 1 Win prizes during the Scratch-Off Ticket game. Get a ticket every day for stopping in; earn even more by completing reading and activity challenges. Win instant prizes or maybe even one of the weekly prize packages.
Libraries Rock! 21st annual Summer Reading Program: through Aug. 3. Ages 18 and older may complete a raffle slip for every book read to be eligible for weekly prizes from local restaurants and businesses.
Wednesday Teas Book Review: 1 to 2 p.m. on Aug. 1. The “Wednesday Teas” book review is co-sponsored with the Penfield Recreation Department. No registration required.
Libraries Rock! Hooping for Every Body: 7 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 1. Dance and games with hula hoops, the latest trend in fun and fitness. Be in awe watching performer Benjamin Berry, then get hooping. Registration opened July 18.
World War II Film Series — “Saving Private Ryan”: 5:45 to 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 2. Rated R. A group of U.S. soldiers goes behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose brothers have been killed in action. Registration opened July 19.
Action Book Club for grades six to eight: 2:30 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 6. Join the fun book club to discuss books with an “Everyday Heroes” theme, celebrating acts of bravery, character and kindness that transform the world in big and small ways. At each meeting, the group will also complete a group community service project. Pick up a copy of “As Brave As You,” by Jason Reynolds, from the display in the Teen Area and read prior to meeting. Registration opened July 23.
Practice SAT: 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 7. Students in grades 10-12 can seize this chance to prepare for the official SAT by taking a practice test under “real” times test conditions. After the test, learn how to score the exam and interpret the results. Registration opens two weeks prior.

Libraries Rock! Open Mic With Bach to Rock: 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 8. Hosted by Penfield’s Bach to Rock! The group will welcome musicians, poets, comedians, etc., whether this is their first performance or 100th. Showcasing Penfield’s Assets: Fifth annual Open House: 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 12. Come explore what unique community resources and assets the town of Penfield offers to its residents and the community at large. A range of activities for all ages from 20-plus Penfield organizations including the fire and recreation departments, Volunteer Ambulance, gardening groups, religious communities, Penfield Players and many local businesses.
Academic Success Formula: 7 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 13. Get insights and tips from Rich Black, regional director of Tutor Doctor of Rochester, on how to master skills to ensure academic success. This program is open to grades seven through 12 and parents, and registration opens July 30.
Book Discussion Group: 7 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 16. Leader is Ernie Orlando. Penfield Librarian Kim Catalanello hosts the monthly Book Discussion Group meeting. This month’s selection is “My Reading Life” by Pat Conroy. No registration is required. Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk.
SPCC WIC — Women, Infants and Children: 7 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 20. Learn about the food program that provides healthy foods to pregnant and breastfeeding women. Children are welcome to attend with their moms; registration will begin Aug. 1.
