Fairport Field Hockey held a breast cancer awareness game against Gates-Chili High School on Oct. 1.
In August, the junior varsity and varsity Fairport Field Hockey teams held their annual car wash. The teams elected to donate a portion of the car wash proceeds to the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester. The mission of the coalition is to provide support to those touched by a diagnosis of breast cancer, to make access to information and care a priority through education and advocacy and to empower women and men to participate fully in decisions relating to breast cancer. Donations are used to provide free programs and services to those facing a breast or gynecologic cancer diagnosis.
The Breast Cancer Coalition — bccr.org — is a community-based organization that serves those in the aftermath of breast and/or gynecologic cancers.
The Fairport Field hockey team will double their donation from last year in the amount of $500.
The field was decorated with pink balloons that each player wrote a message to a loved one who has dealt with breast cancer in some way. The players were outfitted in pink jerseys and socks for the game. Anyone who donated received a pink balloon to write their own message to a loved one. After the game, players, family and fans gathered on the field and launched their balloons.
