Schools in the Sodus Central School District are closed Tuesday as deputies continue to search for a suspect in the double murder in the Village of Sodus.

Shortly after 2 p.m. Monday, a man shot and killed two people on Carlton Street. It happened between Benton Place and the Sodus Central School District.

According to a neighbor, the suspect walked up to a car that was pulling out of their driveway and shot and killed the female driver. The suspect also shot and killed a man who was across the street.

Officials say the suspect was last seen wearing a dark-hooded sweatshirt and a green hat.

Our news partner, News10NBC spoke with the neighbor who initially called 911.

"I heard what I thought was fireworks, I turned around and saw a guy fall under the car and somebody shooting," said Anthony Mancine.

In a news briefing Monday night, Wayne County Chief Deputy Stephen Sklenar said both victims have been identified, but they are not releasing this information until their families have been notified. Officials say the man and woman killed did know each other.

Residents are urged to stay inside if possible and to be cognizant of suspicious activity. If you see something suspicious, you're urged to call 911.

Following this incident, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office sent out a shelter in place for all residents and the Sodus Central School District was put on lockdown Monday. As of 4:30 p.m. Monday, students were released from school and sent home. However, students were not allowed to walk home due to the ongoing investigation.

Wayne County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a double homicide in Sodus, NY.

A county official says a man shot and killed two people on Carlton Street between the Reliant Community Credit Union and the Sodus Central School District.

The official says the suspect walked up to a car that was pulling out of their driveway and shot and killed the female driver. He also shot another man who was across the street.

The WCSO sent out a shelter in place for all residents until further notice.

Deputies are still looking for the suspect.
