The donation is in memory of Trooper A.J. Sperr, an Aquinas graduate killed in the line of duty

The New York State Police recently provided its annual donation to scholarship funds at St. Lawrence School, Aquinas Institute of Rochester and Monroe Community College in memory of Trooper A.J. Sperr.

This year’s donations totaled $12,000.

NYSP officers frequently spend time with the Sperr family, because they will always be part of their trooper family.

Trooper Andrew J. "A.J." Sperr was killed in the line of duty in 2006 when he stopped a vehicle in Big Flats, Chemung County, for a traffic violation. The occupants, who had just robbed a bank, shot and mortally wounded him, though he was able to return fire and strike them both, resulting in their apprehension when they sought medical assistance, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Sperr had served with the New York State Police for 10 years and was assigned to Troop E. He was a 1991 graduation of the Aquinas Institute.
