Veronica “Roni” Puglisi, director of educational and supports services for Victor Central School District, recently was named Administrator of the Year by the New York State School Counselor Association.
Puglisi was nominated by VCSD counselors and administrators for being a “fearless leader” who led the district in the charge to develop a new school counseling curriculum, as well as a tireless advocate for students and school counselors.
Co-nominator Moira Platzer, counselor at Victor Senior High School, said Puglisi has the heart, soul and philosophy of a counselor.
“Roni’s tireless spirit, unwavering support and consistent advocacy for students and staff puts her in a class of her own,” she said.
“Roni’s branches are far-reaching,” said Mary Banaszak, counselor at Victor Senior High School. “As director of educational and support services for our district, her leadership has provided the canopy over our work and we have felt her unwavering support each step of the way. She provided the structure and process to foster the development of a shared vision, philosophy and belief statements among our entire PPS staff and administration.”
Emily Schosek, counselor at Early Childhood School in Victor, said no administrator deserves this recognition more than Puglisi.
“As a leader, her ability to guide, support and inspire are unmatched,” Schosek said. “She values and respects the insights of her team, and navigates challenges with graceful perseverance. Roni has truly been a driving force behind our comprehensive guidance plan. It is obvious that this work has meant more to her than just a requirement to fill. She is passionate about our team’s work and knows that this document will have a considerable impact on the lives our students.”
Before coming to Victor, Puglisi was a special education teacher for 12 years in Norfolk, Virginia. Her journey to director of educational and support services at VCSD started in 1995 as a special education teacher in the primary school before becoming an assistant principal in the junior and senior high schools.
Puglisi said it is an honor to be recognized by a group of professionals that are dedicated and committed to their profession.
“It’s a privilege and pleasure to work with our school counselors here in Victor Central Schools,” she said.
The NYSSCA Administrator of the Year Award recognizes a department, building or district leader who has provided outstanding support to the school counseling profession. Puglisi will be honored at the NYSSCA annual conference on Nov. 16 at the Sagamore Resort in Bolton Landing.
