Irondequoit High School’s student newspaper, Rodequoit, and its literary magazine, Chickenscratch, along with several students, earned top awards from the Empire State Scholastic Press Association.
IHS students from Mr. Kunz’s journalism class and the newspaper and magazine received the honors on Friday at Syracuse University. They also attended classes ranging from editorial leadership, design, writing, photojournalism and reporting, all taught by professionals in the field.
Rodequoit, which won overall highest achievement, gold award winners are Mary Rand, news writing; Rachel Yovanovich, editorial writing; Max McHale, editorial page; and Ben Christensen, editorial writing. Silver award winners are Fiona Mulrooney, personality or interview story; Owen Boice, news writing; Libby Bell, feature writing; and Rand, editorial writing. The bronze award winner was Mulrooney, editorial writing.
Honorable mentions are Bell, feature writing; Khadija Muhammadi, editorial writing; and Rand and Boice, front page design portfolio
