The Pittsford Mendon High School cross-country varsity teams competed in the Section V Championships on Nov. 3 at MidLakes High School.
The Viking girls’ team beat eight other Class B teams to claim their second consecutive sectional title, scoring 36 points to second-place HFL’s 51 points, earning a spot in the New York State Championships. In a race of 69 girls, Olivia Lucia’s third-place finish led the Vikings to victory. Lucia was closely followed by teammates Anna Schriefer in seventh, Maggie Casey in eighth, Riana Heffron in 11th, Rachel McCarthy in 12th, Julia Tomanovich in 13th and Livia Betti in 15th. In the merged classes results, the Mendon girls placed second for all of Section V against 49 other schools, regardless of classification — school size.
Mendon’s boys’ team earned second place, scoring 50 points to team champion HFL’s 41 points. Against 11 other teams, the Vikings were led by individual Section V Class B Champion Sam Lawler. In a race of 85 boys, Lawler was followed by teammates Jimmy Smith in fourth, Matt Queiroz in sixth, Drew Cox in 17th, Nico Valentine in 22nd, Tom Morrell in 31st and Nathan Trumble in 34th. Lawler, Smith and Quieroz earned individual spots at the New York State Championships.
