Army National Guard promotes local soldiers

Matthew Link, of Gates, and James Brennan and Drew Gansz, of Rochester, recently received promotions from the New York Army National Guard.

Brennan and Gansz were promoted to the rank of sergeant. Brennan serves with the Company A, 2-108th Infantry. Gansz is assigned to the 42nd Infantry Division Band.

Link, who serves with the 222nd Military Police Company, received a promotion to the rank of staff sergeant.

Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability and development potential.

 

Chili native named RPO featured soloist

McQuaid Jesuit student Luciano Pagano, of Chili, recently performed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Rochester Oratorio Society as the featured boy soprano soloist for “Carmina Burana” and the “Chichester Psalms.”

Orff’s “Carmina Burana” is based on 24 poems found in the medieval collection of the same title. The 20th-century choral piece has been heard in film, TV and at professional sports events.

Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” draws themes from Psalm 23 and serves as a spiritual balance to “Carmina Burana.”

 

Greece Library trustee recognized for years of service

Eugene Welch recently received recognition from the town of Greece for his 14 years of service as a trustee at Greece Public Library.

Supervisor Bill Reilich presented a town proclamation to Welch during a recent library board meeting, thanking him for demonstrating extraordinary volunteerism and community responsibility to the citizens of Greece.

Welch oversaw improvements to the library’s buildings and its services, including digital technology, e-readers and the Creation Station.

The Rochester native received his Juris Doctor from the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

 

Hilton students receive $7K in scholarships

The Hilton Education Foundation recently awarded $7,500 in scholarships, in addition to Surface Pro 5 bundles, to three Hilton High School graduates: Cameron Conolly, Alexander Gargano and Katie Singleton.

Singleton plans to attend SUNY Geneseo. Conolly will study epidemiology at the University of Rochester. The Skilled Trades and Services Scholarship went to Gargano, who will study in the building trades program at Alfred State.

HEF annually offers three scholarships to Hilton seniors. Two are awarded based on continued academic progress, extracurricular involvement and volunteer work. The skilled trades scholarship goes to students planning to further their education in skilled trades or services.
