Two are dead following an afternoon crash on the Lake Ontario State Parkway.

Two people are dead following a car crash on the Lake Ontario State Parkway.

Cpl. John Helfer from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office says that a male driver of an SUV and with a female passenger was heading east on the Lake Ontario State Parkway.

The vehicle T-boned a passenger vehicle at the intersection of North Road, or Route 259 that was heading north.

The impact left a man and woman, who are believed to have been husband and wife, dead, Helfer said.

After hitting the car, the male driver then fled the scene, heading south. Moments later, the vehicle struck a tree on Huffer Road, injuring the female passenger. Helfer says she's in critical condition at this time.

The Hilton Fire District responded to the scene, and both females were transported to area hospitals.

Helfer says the driver is in custody with non-serious injuries, and charges are pending.
