Toyota USA Foundation has donated $120,000 to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) College of Science.
The Toyota USA Foundation is a charitable endowment supporting math and science education in grades kindergarten through twelfth. The purpose of the grant is to expand RIT's Summer Mathematics Institute Teachers' Workshop program into a national model for putting math into context for high school students.
RIT will hold an application process and a committee from the School of Mathematical Sciences will pick the three universities that will receive $20,000 each from the grant to run the workshops. The grant will fund the 2014 annual workshop at RIT with $20,000 and $40,000 will cover costs associated with administrating the program.
The workshops involve inviting mathematicians from all sectors, including students, faculty, alumni and others, to speak with high school educators about the different ways they apply math to solving real-world problems.
