Regarded by many as a favorite Chinese restaurant, Hong Wah has been listed in the annual Top 100 Chinese Restaurant in the U.S. for the fourth year in a row.

Hong Wah was listed in the overall Excellence in Chinese Cuisine category for 2011. In previous years, it was awarded in other categories including Best Healthy Menu, and Local Favorite.

The winners were announced in Santa Clara, California on Jan. 9. Restaurant owners Kevin Zheng and Vicky Shi did not make the trip, but said they are happy to be honored yet again.

To be eligible for recognition, restaurants must be nominated by customers who vote for them online. Most importantly, each restaurant is screened by anonymous inspectors, the editors of Chinese Restaurant News.

Hong Wah was anonymously screened last fall. Although the owners were not told when they were being screened or which customer was the undercover judge, Shi said it was a relief to know they were recognized for doing business as usual.

She described one couple who came to eat and offered their compliments on their way out.

“They said, ‘We go to a lot of Chinese restaurants and other places seem cold. When we come to your restaurant, everybody says hi and makes us feel welcome.’” Shi added, “That makes us feel good, that we were doing it without knowing it.”
