Senior Tony Rozzano scores both goals off long passes from senior Danny Peckham for the Warriors. Senior Liam Wheatley header rebound save on a Spartans corner kick preserves the shutout in the second half.
The strategy by Webster Schroeder coach Dave Urbanski of utilizing the long, over-the-top pass paid off with two goals for the No. 1 seeded Warriors in the Section 5 Class AAA quarterfinals on Friday night at home against No. 8 Gates Chili.
Schroeder (15-1-1) won 2-0 over the Spartans (6-9-3) to advance to Tuesday's 5 p.m. semifinal at Spencerport High School against No. 5 Webster Thomas(9-7-1), a 4-3 winner of No. 4 Fairport on penalty kicks.
Senior Tony Rozzano and Danny Peckham combined for both goals, one in each half. Peckham, a defenseman, sent a long pass that Rozzano garnered in and beat the Gates Chili goalie.
"We were talking about playing the ball over top," Urbanski said. "They were pressing us hard and we played a ball over top, and Anthony made a good decision with both goals. Put him on a one versus one, and he's as good as anybody in the league."
The first tally came with 11:10 to play in the first half, then Rozzano scored an insurance goal, to help the pressure the Spartans were applying, with 13:26 left in the second half.
Gates Chili came close to tying the contest on a corner kick. Warrior junior goalie Andy Siviy punched the ball, but right to the head of a Spartan, whose shot was headed away by Schroeder senior Liam Wheatley to keep the Spartans off the scoreboard.
"Gates played very tough and they put the ball in a dangerous area," Urbanski said. "Even though they didn't get a lot of chances on us, in terms of shots, it seemed that each of the corners or free kicks gave us trouble. That's something we've got to sort out before Tuesday."
The other semifinal will feature No. 2 Penfield, a 3-0 winner over No. 7 Monroe-Edison, and No. 6 Rush-Henrietta, a 5-4 victor against No. 3 Jefferson-Franklin on penalty kicks.
