Irondequoit has been good to him, says Dr. Daniel Flaherty.

I have great patients, he said. I was chosen as a Featured Business by the Irondequoit Chamber of Commerce (last month) ... Everybody is just great.

Dr. Flaherty, who worked for Lifetime Health for 10 years before opening his own practice in Irondequoit four and a half years ago, has been sponsoring Little League and other sports teams and doing the occasional free blood pressure and diabetes screenings. He has also become one of the sponsors of the Irondequoit Farmers Market.

His own interest in medicine, Dr. Flaherty said, started with an interest in science, and the fact that his father an artist whose pictures grace the walls of his sons office was a pharmaceutical rep.

I figured Id teach biology or stay in school (and become a doctor), Dr. Flaherty said. I like that it (being a doctor) is interactive with people and that theres job stability, he added with a smile. Plus, I meet a huge variety of people.

While Dr. Flaherty does have a private family practice at Ridgeplex Commons in Irondequoit, he also saw a need, after hearing from patients that they went to the emergency room for a cough.

We looked at the area and noticed that a gap existed in prompt, compassionate, quality care for patients in the Irondequoit community during the evening and weekend, Dr. Flaherty said of the decision to open Flower City Fast Care.

The walk-in medical care office is located on the lower level of Ridgeplex Commons for two years now, and perhaps its biggest drawback has been its lack of visibility.

Dr. Flaherty is hoping to remedy that situation with new signage on East Ridge Road later this year.

Flower City Fast Care is part of a growing trend of urgent care facilities offering services for non-emergency situations, such as minor lacerations, burns, sprains, strains, sore throats, cough, cold, allergies, and any number of other ailments.

Its a more personal, friendly atmosphere (than, say, a hospital emergency room), where people can receive proper, efficient medical care, Dr. Flaherty said.

A lot of patients prefer coming here instead of the emergency room because its a lot faster, added Terry Arnold, a physicians assistant at Flower City Fast Care since 2011. The typical visit lasts about 30 minutes, including wait time and evaluation. No appointment is needed and the practice accepts more than a dozen medical insurance plans.

Dr. Flaherty, who has a warm, inviting sense of humor and is proud of his Irish heritage, says his private practice ranges from newborns to age 99.

He expects Flower City Fast Care, which is still growing, will be much the same. In fact, hes already expending the Flower City concept, and will be opening second facility, in Lima, in the near future.

Im flattered that I was recognized by the Irondequoit chamber, Dr. Flaherty said. Ive been getting to know the Irondequoit community, and we are getting a lot of positive feedback from patients, sports teams, and now the Chamber of Commerce!
