Vice President Joe Biden and Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday more than $600 million will be invested to create a national headquarters in photonics. The Integrated Photonics Institute for Manufacturing Innovation announced at Ponds Business Park in Greece will create thousands of jobs in the Rochester region, according to the announcement. It will bring together government, industry and academia to advance photonics research and its use commercially.
Photonics is a science using light to advance robotics, medical imaging, national security and other fields.
The grant is expected to expand existing manufacturing sites such as the SUNY Poly Smart System Technology and Commercialization Center campus in Canandaigua, said U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, who was among the local, state and congressional representatives at the announcement. As the details are worked out during the next six months, it is expected the Canandaigua site will become home to a new assembly and packaging facility for photonics technologies.
A $110 million federal grant awarded to the SUNY Polytechnic-led “American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics” will support a high-tech consortium with business operations, a company incubator and accelerator, workforce training, and board of directors headquartered in Rochester.
Total public and private investment in the Photonic Institute will exceed $600 million, including more than $250 million by New York state to equip, install, and make operational a state-of-the-art photonics prototyping operation.
The institute’s work will create and support thousands of advanced research and manufacturing jobs across upstate and nationally and lead to major advances within a wide range of practical applications.
The Rochester area was selected to house the institute following an intense competition for the award. The selection is part of a White House initiative focused on the United States’ as a global leader in emerging technology research, development, and manufacturing.
“All the intellectual power we need resides right here,” Biden said Monday.
