To help older adults and their loved ones in our community navigate the downsizing process, The Summit at Brighton held a Downsizing and Moving Seminar on Jan. 26, where experts discussed tips for selling homes in today’s market and how to right-size individual lifestyles.

Nearly 10,000 boomers are retiring every day, and half of them plan to downsize when they do retire. By 2030, people age 65 and older will make up one-fifth of the total U.S. population, while Americans aged 85 and older are the fastest-growing age group in the U.S.
Downsizing expert Karen Lesser-Menachof and Re/Max Realtor Betti Salzman shared current housing trends and advice on choosing a Realtor, preparing a house and transitioning with confidence and ease.
“I liked the presentation very much, especially the Caring Transitions speaker Karen Menachof,” attendee Gary Cox said. “Loved hearing firsthand from our residents. It reinforced my decision to move to The Summit this spring.”
Residents at The Summit at Brighton attended to share why they decided to downsize and any challenges or benefits they experienced when making the change. Summit resident and downsizer Chuck Buck knows firsthand that downsizing can either be a disaster or a seamless transition.
Chuck and his wife decided to move to Rochester to be closer to their daughter after living in South Carolina for 46 years. The move was a disaster, and he and his wife received significantly less compensation than they expected from the downsizing company. After moving to a Rochester-area senior living facility that was unfriendly and not at all like it was advertised, he and his wife made their home at The Summit at Brighton.
“They packed everything, and we were ready to move the next day,” Buck said.
The Summit at Brighton is an independent senior living community on the Jewish Senior Life campus, the only Rochester-area Continuing Care Retirement Community. Jewish Senior Life is the only Rochester-area senior care provider to offer a full continuum of care and services all on one campus.
