FUSION, a female quartet of a cappella singers specializing in the barbershop harmony style, four-time area medalist and six-time international medalist, recently earned special recognition at an international competition as the recipients of Harmony Inc.’s Image of Harmony Award.
Out of hundreds of quartets across the United States and Canada, FUSION was honored with the Image of Harmony Award, which is presented to the quartet demonstrating notable service to both Harmony Inc. and the community in which the quartet lives.
The presentation took place in Providence, Rhode Island, as part of an annual convention of Harmony Inc., which featured educational sessions, various categories of competition and performances by past and current championship choruses and quartets.
The Image of Harmony Award is presented annually to the quartet exhibiting outstanding service to the genre of barbershop harmony. The award was initiated and donated by the members of “Images,” the 1997 Harmony Inc. quartet champions.
FUSION earned this honor for its extensive contributions, including but not limited to gratis performances for the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, Muscular Dystrophy, Coffee Connection, Gilda’s Club and The Mary Cariola Children’s Center. FUSION has also performed in support of the local nonprofit choral community including performances with the Amadeus Chorale Youth Singers, Greece Choral Society and Chorus America. The quartet is serving Harmony Inc. in directorial, education development, website maintenance, coaching/mentoring other groups, youth outreach through Harmony Explosion Camp and performing at local schools and in various volunteer capacities with Harmony, Inc.
“FUSION has gotten so much from Harmony, Inc. and the barbershop harmony hobby in general throughout the years that we are more than happy to give back in these ways,” says Charlene Sudore, FUSION member. “To be recognized by our peers for our contributions is truly the icing on the cake, and instills in us a pride that we carry back to the Greater Rochester, New York community.”
“FUSION represents one of the most important core values of Harmony, Inc.,” says Christina Lewellen, Harmony Inc. president. “Giving back to our organization and fostering a love of barbershop harmony among others is so highly respected that the Image of Harmony Award is the least we can do to recognize and thank FUSION for their efforts.”
FUSION’s members are Charlene Sudore, tenor, of Webster; Amy DePerna, lead, of Webster; Susan Melvin Lindamood, bass, of Rochester; and Kathy Dickson, baritone, of Irondequoit. Melvin Lindamood and Dickson also sing with Rochester Rhapsody chorus based in Webster.
FUSION has been singing together for 10 years and has an extensive repertoire that suits a wide range of occasions and musical tastes.
