Saturday marked the fourth anniversary of the deadly attack on first responders in West Webster that shocked the community.

Emergency crews that had been called to a house fire on Lake Road were ambushed that day, where Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were shot and killed. Joseph Hofstetter and Ted Scardino were injured.

Police say a gunman set the blaze at his house and then fired at the first responders.

On Saturday, the department and community visited a memorial in honor of the firefighters.

"It is a tragedy every year," said West Webster Fire Commissioner Tom Link, "it interrupts the family of every first responder during the Christmas holiday season."

"It is an opportunity for everybody to appreciate, thank, and feel for all the first responders that are going out everyday of the year, much less at this time of year- the holiday season when everyone should be home with their families."

The gathering was on Lake Road, where there is a memorial to all West Webster firefighters who died in the line of duty at Station One on Gravel Road.
