The Fairport Merchants Association recently announced that the winner of the 41st anniversary Fairport Canal Days Festival poster contest is Lorraine Staunch.
Staunch is the second person to achieve the distinction a second time. Her recent work is “Flags Waving over Fairport.”
“The last time I saw the Canal Days flags waving in the wind, I was moved,” said Staunch. “They awoke a celebratory reaction in me. I just had to paint it. Through the years Fairport Canal Days has brought the community together as I hope these flags bring us as a little bit closer to each other. Enjoy.”
“The piece is bright, colorful, and iconic of Fairport’s world-famous lift bridge and ever-popular waterfront. We love it,” said Ed Bradford, chairman of Fairport Canal Days.
The finished work has been printed in a limited quantity of 250, 16-by-20-inch full-color posters. Staunch will be available to personally sign posters at booth SME 210, located in front of Village Hall. Poster prints may be purchased for $10 each at the village hall information booth during the festival.
“There are six elements that come together to make a good piece of art,” said Staunch. “I would like to add one more, emotion. My aim is to evoke a feeling in every piece I create. If after seeing one of my large paintings you feel wild, happy, sad or energized, I have done my job. In each commission I am asked to do, it is important to know what my client is all about, their hopes and dreams, their personal color palette and what feeling they are trying to convey. My work reflects the personality of my subjects as seen through my eyes, filtered through my mind and committed in paint through my hands.”
Nineteen years ago, Staunch founded a company with a concentration in murals, faux finishes, large paintings, design and color selection for commercial, residential and public spaces. Her work has evolved to extremely large paintings, corporate identification murals as well as residential. She is currently exhibiting a one-woman-show at The VB Brewery in Victor.
Staunch, a resident of Fairport, is a graduate of Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, where she majored in painting and minored in sculpture. Upon graduating, she was hired as head illustrator at a Christmas design firm in Forest City, North Carolina, drew portraits at Walt Disney World, designed and painted sets for several community theater productions exhibited one-woman shows and has won awards for her paintings.
