Pittsford Crew, a rowing club in Rochester with 149 novice and varsity athletes, competed in three local regattas this season including the Lift Bridge Regatta in Fairport, The Head Of The Genesee and their own “Pull The Plug” Regatta, which they hosted Nov. 5.
In September, two of Pittsford Crew’s athletes were selected to compete in the Youth Regional Challenge that took place during the 2017 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida. The challenge, which was represented by six regions, featured 312 U19 rowers who competed in eights and quadruple sculls. Selected for the Northeast Region’s team were Pittsford Crew’s Bianka Smeulders, whose boat finished third in the women’s A final; and coxswain Jack DiGiovanni, who led his boat to a first-place finish in the men’s B final.
In mid-October, 26 Pittsford Crew athletes competed in Boston at the 53rd annual Head Of The Charles Regatta. Pittsford Crew’s men’s varsity eight team included Jack DiGiovanni, Dominic Miller, Justin Riley, Wynn Roberts, Arnold Sullivan, Drew Vahey, Jack Wiant, Liam Young, Max Zimmerman and Magnus Rorapaugh. Their varsity women’s four and women’s varsity eight — which placed 34th out of 85 and earned their spot to compete next year — included Caroline DeLaney, Megan Marshall, Annie Bryson, Cory Cunningham, Sara Dotson, Erica Ekholm, Jenna Erb, Jamylin Goggin, Flynn Herron, Elise McCamant, Miranda Pasquarette, Bianka Smeulders, Karenna Thomas, Rebekah Vaules, and Aubrey Doyen. Competing in the men’s youth single was sculler Brendan Kieser, who placed 21st.
In late October, Pittsford’s varsity and ready-novice men’s and women’s teams traveled to Philadelphia to compete in the Head Of The Schuylkill Regatta. Notably, their novice girls’ and boys’ teams each placed eighth in their races. The men’s varsity eight placed 21st and the women’s varsity eight placed 18th. The men’s junior varsity eight placed fifth, and two of the women’s junior varsity eight boats placed 13th and 15th in their combined race.
The club’s competitive season will resume in spring 2018 and will host their annual Pittsford Regatta during Memorial Day weekend. Learn-to-Row programs will be offered throughout that summer, welcoming local middle and high school students interested in the sport of rowing.
